My Sister and I: Fashion Series, Spring

Ever since this blog’s beginnings, I’ve been getting inquiries and requests to do fashion, which is weird, because ever since I’ve been born, I’ve been super intentional about being seen in public places with my fuzzy slippers, my deep set, no-makeup “Asian eyes”, and fluffy sweats.  It always seemed crazy to me that anyone would be interested in that.

I just never got it. I never got why anyone would want to know what I’m wearing, except my husband of course, who at this point seems to be more concerned with what I’m NOT wearing. Let’s just be real. He’d be happy if I wore a pair of lace curtains somewhere in the general vicinity of my body, preferably my head, every day. Yeah. I love him, but…he’s not exactly in the running to be my fashion consultant anytime soon.

First of all, I don’t think of myself as being stylish. Most of the time, I still think of myself as the little Amish school girl, who got excited about ruched up socks and the poof of hair that managed to peek out of my white bonnet.

No, really. The higher that poof, the better. I have pictures to prove it.

Perhaps it was my childhood and our super practical approach to clothes, or my now-busy Mom life, but it just never dawned on me that I could have a style. It still catches me off-guard when people compliment me on it.

My internal reaction is always, “what style? Oh, you mean the clothes I’m wearing? You mean the sweater I threw on with my floral dress and sneakers somehow happened to be cute?”

IMG_2370I was talking with my sister, LeAnna the other day and we both agreed that we are just now coming into our own ‘style,’ after all these years of wearing hand-me-downs, and whatever was on the clearance rack, whether it looked good on us or not. We laughed about the hideous phases we’ve each gone through and how we are just now really enjoying this thing called fashion. We are both learning to love the process and the art of presenting ourselves to the world through the clothes we wear.

We’re finally having fun with clothes, and realizing what a priviledge it is! What a luxury it is to walk into our closets and have so much to choose from, to express our moods, our loves, our art, our selves!

Who knew it was sooo much FUN???

I asked LeAnna to do this with me, because she inspires me to have fun with the clothes I wear and to “own my style.” And together, that’s what we want to do for you! We hope to inspire you in this series, to wear what YOU feel good in, to put yourself out there and express YOURSELF authentically in the clothes you wear. And while we will be talking about clothes, this series is not so much about the labels or certain exclusive pieces, it is more about ideas and inspiration, so feel free to critique, love, adore, or ignore if it’s not for you.

This is really just about two Amish girls, each finding their OWN true expression in the clothes they wear, and having fun in the process. It’s about two thirty-something women embracing the skin they’re in, feeling comfortable (and confident!) and encouraging others to find that joy as well.

So without futher ado, here’s my Sister and I, and what we’re wearing this Spring.

I am loving all the dreamy denim and deep blues of this season, such as this blue top that I picked up at Ross a few weeks ago, and Lea is loving all the neutral greys and off-whites with her holey H&M jeans, of course, and plaid chucks.

I’m into a messy side bun and she likes to wear hers neatly on top of her head.

IMG_2197And let’s not forget my favorite nude lip gloss by Bare Minerals, which we are forever snagging and swapping with each other, and my sister’s obsession with pink lips, and vintage fringe bags.

So FUN.

IMG_2091IMG_2153I’m currently also adoring this blue knit dress I found at a discount store in my hometown Fort Collins, featuring a deep side slit so I can run after my two-year-old, and a lace back so I can look pretty doing it.

Meanwhile, no one rocks black spandex and a midriff, like my sissy does. I mean.

Look at this gorgeousness.

Topped off with a pretty floral sheer from Macy’s, and a red handbag from my suitcase, who can resist??

Not me. In fact, I think I need to go do some crunches now.

See ya this summer!

Note to my readers: This will be a four-part series, one for each season-Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter-showing you two to three outfits per post, with possibly a few bonus posts to show you my happy little “fashion finds” along the way. We look forward to bringing you more fun fashion inspiration in the future!
